In order to design a lightning protection system a Risk Assessment needs to be carried out for each structure to be considered.

Using the latest Strike Risk Management software Nimbus will carry out an assessment upon receipt of the following information:

  • Use and type of structure
  • Dimensions of structure (L x W x H in metres)
  • Number of services lines feeding the structure
  • Power, single/three phase, overhead or underground
  • Telecoms, how many lines, overhead or underground
  • Length of services lines
  • Location
  • Environment (urban, suburban, rural)
  • Service line only or with transformer
  • Special hazards (low, average, high level of panic)
  • Type of surface (concrete, asphalt, wood etc)
  • Any fire protection provisions (manual extinguisher, automatic extinguishing system)
  • Risk of fire (high, ordinary, low)
  • Soil resistivity
  • Voltage withstand of a) power cable b) telecom cable
  • Any spatial screening (any re-inforcing bars/stanchions within the framework of the structure)
  • Any details of services lines
  • Screened/unscreened cable
  • Routing
  • Flash density

We are aware that you or the client may not have all the above information to hand particularly Items 12 (Soil Resistivity) and 16 (Flash Density). Where information is not provided we will use default values to calculate the Risk Assessment.

However, please be aware that by not providing accurate information the Risk Assessment will not be completely accurate which may result in the incorrect level of lightning protection being recommended.
